Bristol Buccaneers proved too strong for the Bristol Brunels in the second local derby on Sunday, winning the doubleheader 20-4 and 14-4, cementing their place at the top of the BBF/SWWBL Severn Division.

The Buccaneers’ offense took control from the first pitch of the day and didn’t let up. Will Marshall hit two inside the park home runs, while Luca McCurdy showed his power once again, clearing the fences in the second game. Marshall and McCurdy drove in 11 runs between them.

Marshall was in good form from the mound in game one, striking out four Brunels over his three innings pitched. Justin Trory, Noah McCurdy and Jordan Nichols all hit doubles for the Buccaneers as the team scored heavily in every inning.

Despite scoring four runs in the first inning, the Brunels found it difficult to convert base runners, while six fielding errors handed Buccaneers’ batters free bases. The second game followed the same pattern with Rod McCurdy hitting a triple and his son Luca hitting his third home run of the season.

It was an extremely solid performance in every aspect of the game,” said Buccaneers manager, Rod McCurdy. “We seem to be improving every time we take the field but we know there will be no easy games going forward.

The Buccaneers are now two games clear of the Weston Jets at the top of their division.

The Buccaneers are a very good team but it was disappointing we could not make more of the opportunities we had,” said Alex Lane-Kieltyka, the Brunels manager. “We need to tighten up our fielding but I am pleased the way players have improved from the start of the season.

Next Up: Next weekend, all the club’s teams are in action. At Somerdale, the Badgers welcome Bracknell Inferno while the Brunels host Yeovil Whirlwinds. The Bats travel to Bournemouth to take on the Bears, while the Buccaneers will be nearby in the New Forest playing the Knights.
