Three local baseball players are close to making the final GB rosters for the 2022 European Championships.

Becky Cottrell and Kat Golik are both on the provisional roster for the GB Women’s team while Tom Maclennan is competing for a spot in the GB Baseball U15 team.

Becky Cottrell currently plays for the mixed Bristol Brunels team as well as the club’s women’s team, the Bristol Bobcats.

As well as baseball, Becky also plays hockey and softball locally and is a fan of West Ham United football club.

Kat Golik plays for the Bobcats and the Bristol Bats and has represented the GB slowpitch softball team in the European Championships.

Tom Maclennan, who fell in love with baseball while living in Washington DC, currently plays for the Bristol Brunels and also plays rugby and football locally.

All three players spent the winter attending GB training sessions in Sheffield, London, Slough and Bournemouth and face an anxious wait to find out if they will represent their country.

To support the costs of their training, and going to the championships if they make the final rosters, the club has launched a Crowdfunder.

Anyone wanting to support the three local athletes, can go to https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/p/funding-support-for-our-gb-players to make a donation.

“We are very proud of all three of them and we wish them the best of luck in their efforts to represent GB Baseball,” said Rhodri Theaker, Bristol Baseball’s Head Coach. “The fact they have got onto the provisional rosters is a tribute to their commitment and also reflects well on the club and our efforts to develop players.”

Sunday’s Bristol Bats’ fixture against Cardiff Merlins II was rained off but this weekend, the Badgers welcome Bournemouth Bears to Somerdale Pavilion in Keynsham for their BBF AAA doubleheader.

Also on Sunday, the Buccaneers host the Brunels for a local derby on the club’s second field at Somerdale.
