The Badgers and the Bats brought their 2021 campaigns to an end by sweeping their opponents on Sunday at Somerdale Pavilion.

In the AAA double header the Badgers overcame SW Rebeldes 4-0 and 11-1 with Tom Hollies shutting out the Rebeldes in game one.

As well as shutting out the powerful Rebeldes line up and striking out eight batters over seven innings pitched, Hollies also contributed two RBIs at the plate.

Infielders Rich Green and Carlson Charles had multi hit games to help the Badgers score early.

The Badgers’ offense came alive in the second game with outfielder George Braeger contributing three hits including a triple as the Bristol team racked up a six run fifth inning.

Rhodri Theaker took over from Hollies on the mound and pitched four scoreless innings to round off a successful afternoon.

“It was great to finish with a couple of good wins despite a difficult season hit by injuries and absences,” said Bristol head coach Rhodri Theaker. “We stepped up from AA to AAA this season and we have a great group of players who I believe can move forward and challenge for honours in 2022.”

The Bats swept the previously unbeaten Cardiff Merlins, 8-5 and 11-1 to finish one game behind the Severn Division champions.

Tyron Porter had another good day on the mound striking out six Merlins as well getting two hits at the plate while Paul Carter contributed two RBIs to the winning total.

The second game saw Bats’ debutant Michael Comport hit a massive home run behind a great pitching performance by Paul Carter who gave up just one run in his six innings pitched.

Carter also had a great game with the bat, with three hits and four RBIs with catcher Neptali Ortega also having a multi hit game.

“It was probably our best all round performance and doubly pleasing to beat the champions to finish the season,” said player manager Tom Rowe. “It been great to play a full season and with a little luck here and there we could have won the title.”

Next weekend players from the Bats, Buccaneers and Brunels will represent the club in the SWWBL All Star game in Taunton as part of the championships finals day which will see the Cardiff Merlins take on the Cornish Claycutters in the final.

The winners will go forward to the British Baseball Federation (BBF) A playoffs and finals which are being held at Bristol Baseball Club’s field at Somerdale Pavilion on the weekend of 11th and 12th September.
